Has it really been that long?Posted Monday, June 6, 2011, at 7:53 PM
Recently, my wife Merry has gotten heavily involved in planning her high school 20-year reunion with some of her fellow classmates.
From time to time, they have met for two hours on a Saturday, giving James David and I time to kick back, relax, and ... well, not do much. Anyway, she and I both graduated from high school the same year. Merry is a Northview graduate. I graduated from Owen Valley. With her planning this event, which by the way, sounds like it should be a fun time, I started wondering about those "good 'ole days." Those days when life was -- for lack of a better term -- care-free. When you'd spend five hours working, get in the car, head to town and spend an evening with your friends. I went to my 10-year reunion and it was a good time, but wasn't sure if I wanted to attend a 20-year reunion. Has it really been that long? On Sunday, I had the privilege of attending the 2011 Clay City High School graduation. I saw students walk up to the podium and receive their diplomas, with their entire lives ahead of them. To put this in perspective, when I graduated from high school, these students who graduated this past weekend weren't even born yet. That is humbling to think about, to say the least. Friends of mine have talked about this in the past, but I never gave it much thought. I mean, we all get older. I guess I didn't think it would happen quite this fast. But, with an 8-month-old in the house, perhaps I'll feel a little younger around the house. Come to think of it, when the graduating students of 2011 are in their mid-30s, James David will just be graduating high school. Still, has it really been that long? |
