At this point, it's become old hat

Posted Friday, September 30, 2011, at 12:44 PM

Every year, I feel obligated to voice frustration with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for oversight when it comes to nominees for induction.

I simply just don't get it.

Earlier this week, the list of nominees for next spring's induction ceremony include The Beastie Boys, The Cure, Donovan, Eric B. and Rakim, Guns N' Roses, Heart, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Freddie King, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rufus with Chaka Khan, The Small Faces/The Faces, The Spinners, Donna Summer and War.

It's hard to argue with some on this list. In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing Guns N' Roses, Heart, The Cure and The Beastie Boys earn recognition.

But I just can't understand why some other musical acts continue to be left out. They aren't even nominated.

A handful of examples would include Chicago, Duran Duran, The Moody Blues, Rush and Kiss. I'm sure I've missed a few, but these artists seemed rather notable to me.

I list Chicago first because for several years now, I've argued they should already be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I've e-mailed representatives of the organization, asking why they are not considered year in and year out and I didn't get a clear-cut response.

According to rockhall.com, artists become eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first record.

Those who vote also consider "factors such as an artist's musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique, but musical excellence shall be the essential qualification of induction."

After reading this, I'm convinced someone has a beef with some of these bands that have not been enshrined.

They just simply don't like them.
