I've been wrong before

Posted Friday, March 9, 2012, at 2:24 PM

As I have said many times before, I was wrong.

I say those three words to my wife quite a bit.

And I'm eating crow as a result.

On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts and long-time star quarterback Peyton Manning parted ways.

Manning was due a $28 million option bonus Thursday if he remained with the club.

The general thinking throughout this whole process was the Colts were going to sink the ship and build a new one.

With a new quarterback at the helm.

The quarterback could be Stanford's Andrew Luck (most likely), although some reports have the Colts expressing interest in Baylor's Robert Griffin III.

For the longest time, I didn't understand why Manning had to go. I thought it was possible for him to man the ship on its current course while Luck or Griffin III learned the ropes.

But, needless to say, that didn't happen.

I have never been a Colts' fan. But I live with two (one of which, coincidentally, is a Colts' fan, but not by choice).

Still, not seeing Manning on the field was weird last year. It will be even stranger this season not seeing him on the team's roster.

Talk about blowing it all up.

A recent rumor had Manning visiting with the Denver Broncos Friday.

Will Tim Tebow fans allow this to happen?

I just had a conversation Friday in regard to this. Sure, Kyle Orton is not a superstar. However, he's a good quarterback who has put up good numbers when the system fit.

Last year, when the season started for Denver, the pieces didn't fit. Orton's numbers stumbled.

Enter Tim Tebow.

Denver made the playoffs and advanced to the second round.

But Tebow is not typical. His passing skills aren't as good as they could, or should be.

Will Tebow fans allow someone else to take the reins?

There are other teams Manning is reportedly meeting with, including Miami and Arizona. And Kansas City still comes up from time to time.

Like watching Joe Montana playing with the Chiefs, or Brett Favre in a Jets and Vikings jersey, it will be strange to watch Manning suit up for another team.

But it's going to happen.
