Ending the Commute
Posted Tuesday, April 29, at 8:37 PM
This morning, I looked at the Speedway sign on 38th street in Indianapolis, and I cried out loud.

With gas at $3.75 a gallon, it takes me the first four hours of my day to pay for my commute alone … sounds like ending my commute now could be very good timing.

I've put 35,000 miles since September on my car, my baby, my Scarlet. She's got a crack in the windshield and a lot of empty McDonalds cups in the back seat floor.

She's glad to be done with the daily driving.

Tomorrow morning, I meet my replacement. I will turn over my files, my computer and my spot on editorial row to a complete stranger.

I feel very protective of my relationship with the other writers, and I'm not sure how I'm going to react to a new person in my desk.

I'm no longer the "newbie."

I wonder if our new writer is prepared to earn a nickname, respond to barn fires and interpret official school corporation jargon.

He or she will have a sharp learning curve -- but so does everyone who works at a newspaper.

And I really wonder how far they have to drive.

A Few Things I've Learned
Posted Tuesday, April 22, at 10:55 AM

As my time at The Brazil Times draws to a close, I've started to reflect on some of the things I've learned since I joined the editorial staff in September. I have learned a lot about the craft of writing and the need to be fair and accurate. I've glimpsed a little on the art of layout and making photos front-page ready...

Riding the Airwaves
Posted Thursday, April 10, at 4:59 PM

There is nothing more nostalgic for me than listening to sports on AM radio. Some of my first memories involve sitting on my grandparent's porch listening to a Chicago Cubs' broadcast with my dad and grandpa. The day the Wisconsin Badgers solidified a birth in the 1994 Rose Bowl, my dad was working at the kitchen table and listening to the 620 WTMJ broadcast...

Suggestions, Not Propaganda
Posted Monday, April 7, at 2:20 PM

As a child of the 1990s, I am a declared Dave Matthews Band fan. I have averaged three DMB concerts a year for the past three years, seeing shows in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. On Sunday, I traveled to Bloomington to see the Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds show supporting Presidential candidate Barack Obama. I expected to be bombarded with pro-Obamba propaganda, from speakers to leaflets to apparel...

A Good Idea
Posted Thursday, March 27, at 5:10 PM

First, let me preface by saying I am not a property owner, and therefore do not pay property taxes. But the tax relief bill signed into law by Gov. Mitch Daniels has caught my attention. I understand the increase in sales tax will spread the burden around, and local government will see major budget slashes in order to control the wild hikes in property tax...

Time to Heal
Posted Tuesday, March 25, at 4:42 PM

A blue paw print marks every Butler University game on my calendar. Where, when, against whom and if it's going to be on television, which station all follows in neatly printed handwriting. No more paw prints, no more dates, no more victories and no more losses...

Post Season Disgrace
Posted Monday, March 17, at 9:15 PM

We all love March Madness. Sports fans, college students and gamblers all crave the NCAA Tournament from mid-April, after the last buzzer, until the conference tournaments start up again. But we forget until Selection Sunday how money and television ratings reign over the "holy grail" of American Sports (sorry, Super Bowl, but the NCAA Tournament takes 3 weeks, not one day)...

Disasterous Driving
Posted Sunday, March 16, at 3:39 PM

I figure, since my blog is called "The Daily Commute," I should write about my latest driving experience. This past week I spent some time on the East Coast, seeing family and exploring a part of the country I've never really been to before. It was some of the more interesting travel I've ever done...

Who ate my spinach?
Posted Tuesday, February 26, at 3:47 PM

Governor Daniels issued a challenge in January to Indiana to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks. We are close to March, and I am not motivated. It's week eight, and I stopped following the recommendations about two weeks ago. I cut my calories to the point that fried food upsets my stomach...

Getting a Little Nervous
Posted Wednesday, February 20, at 10:42 AM

Tonight, my beloved Butler Bulldogs, ranked eighth in the country in both polls, will travel to University of Illinois-Chicago for a late game. And I'm nervous. UIC plays an aggressive, fast-paced game of basketball that never really matches up well against Butler's slow, methodical game...
