Nothing but the Taillights

As I was driving home the other night, the line of semis on 70 seemed to light up rural Clay County like the Vegas strip.
I couldn't fathom why there were so many trucks traveling at 10:30 at night. I understand that driving a rig is usually a 24/7 job (my grandfather and uncle were both drivers), but I guess it never really hit me until that moment. So a big thanks for those who do have to be on the highway at all hours of the night. And drive safely!
A few more night-driving thoughts:
My better half and I have come up with a nickname for semi's that cut into the left lane to pass other trucks. We like to call them "Mavericks" -- they get out of line, have to go faster than everybody else, and generally get somebody irritated every once in a while.
We also have come to call some drivers "sags" -- those who like to dictate the speed of traffic in the left lane at a slower pace than most would like to go. They seem to keep traffic sagging behind them. Maybe this is a better indication of my driving style than the actual flow of traffic.
I'm debating whether my favorite night driving song is "Open Road Song" by Eve 6, or "Life is a Highway," Rascal Flatts or Tom Cochrane acceptable. They're both excellent crank-down-the-windows-and-blast-the-radio songs. Send me some ideas for other evening tunes to add to my repertoire. If you can sing to it, I'll take it!
My car has become my second dinner table, and I'm running out of serving space. My drink carrier is full of old cups, McDonald's bags are accumulating on the floor, and my better half won't get into the car without me apologizing first. And let's not even talk about the back seat. I think it's time to either get one of those 'car trash cans' or start parking next to the dumpster. |
