It's Working!

In high school health class, we were required to complete a nutrition unit.

We learned how bad fast food is, and how lean protein is the perfect snack and all of those good things.

We kept a journal of how many calories we consumed per day, and we tracked how much exercise we got.

I thought it was stupid busy work at the time, but now I'm starting to see the benefits of those lessons.

I'm two weeks into the INShape Indiana 10 in 10 Challenge, and I've dropped about five pounds.

I've stopped eating fast food, cut down on soda and coffee and I've been exercising three times a week, just like the program e-mails recommends.

I'm not going to say it was easy. I've got a craving for Hardee's Curly Fries that may turn into a monster if not fed.

But now that I keep a food journal, I know that whatever I eat, I'll have a record of. It's a form of accountability, and it keeps me honest.

Exercising is the hard part. I'm really having a hard time getting myself out of bed an extra half hour early to go to the gym. It's so easy to say, "I'll just go tomorrow," but pretty soon the week is over and I haven't met my goal.

And that feels worse than getting out of bed.

I feel good, though. I have more energy, and I think I look better in my jeans.

Sunday will be a big temptation, with the NFC Championship Game and all.

Football food, football drinks and a warm, inviting couch.

It has all the makings of undoing a lot of hard work. We shall see if celebrating a Packers Super Bowl will be my undoing.
