Clay City class learns about . . .the Nifty Fifty (12/31/02)
Josh Hummel travels along the Oregon Trail during Clay City Elementary's fifth grade presentation of "Nifty Fifty" states. The audience learned facts and trivia from Joanie Mitchell's class when each student represented their favorite state. Joanie Mitchell's fifth grade class at Clay City Elementary sang, "Fifty nifty United States, from 13 original colonies..." as part of their unit about state capitals...

Second woman charged with battery (12/31/02)
For the second time in less than a week, a woman has been arrested for battery on a child. Monday, Indiana State Police detectives arrested Amy N. Jackson, 20, of Brazil on one C felony count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury. Jackson allegedly battered her two-month-old child on or about Dec. 22, causing the child to sustain severe head trauma, along with other possible long-term medical difficulties to the child...
Brazil unit not called up in Guard activation (12/31/02)
Indiana National Guard units in Jasper, Washington, Linton, Vincennes, Tell City and Martinsville have been called to active service. The Brazil Times contacted B Company, 38th Main Support Battalion, at the Brazil Armory. An employee at the Brazil unit said he could not release any information but he did contact the Military Department of Indiana Public Affairs. They would say only that the Brazil unit has not been affected. They will give an updated official release later...
Couple establishes endowment fund (12/31/02)
- Money will be distributed through the Clay County Community Foundation John and Karen Mercer of Clay City recently established an unrestricted endowment fund through a donation of stock to the Clay County Community Foundation. The John and Karen Mercer Family Endowment Fund will make annual grants to community organizations for projects that will improve the quality of life in Clay County. Their initial contribution will be matched, thereby doubling the value of their fund...
Knights earn best finish ever at Martinsville (12/31/02)
-Staley earns 1st, Allen 2nd in tourney Saturday was a day of firsts for the Northview Knights' wrestling program. And they showed some talented teams that their program is on the upswing. Northview garnered their best team showing ever at the two-day Martinsville Holiday Classic wrestling tournament, placing seventh out of 16 teams with 123 points...
