New bookstore opens in BraziL

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

These Words Bookstore, 2064 W. State Road 340, Brazil, recently opened for business.
Fans of the written word don't have to wait any longer to get reading material in Brazil.

No, the library is not open yet, but there is an alternative.

These Words, a used bookstore, opened recently and has a nice selection to choose from. Located at 2064 W. State Road 340, just past Waterworks Road on the right, the little book shop that could is housed in an extension of the garage. The store is open Monday through Wednesday from 11:30-5 p.m.

Books on tape, cookbooks, large print books, young adult, horror, science fiction and the Oprah Book Club selections are available for purchase. Prices are reasonable, (nothing more than $4,) and credit is offered for trade-in books.

Owner Helen Short felt Brazil needed a bookstore.

"People who read usually buy books," Short said. "The problem is that once you've read them a few times, you usually want to exchange them and there was no place in town to do this. You can only borrow books for three weeks at a time at the library, and you can't loan them out to friends. These Words solves this problem."

Short goes twice a year to trade shows where she purchases books.

Many of the books don't even look used when she receives them.

In addition to the usual reading fare, she also stocks several summer-reading-list books.

"I also do a weekly sale. This week it is buy one Oprah selection and get one free. Next week is a hardcover book sale," Short said.

She's done some advertising, and has a small sign out in the front yard, but most of her business has been word-of-mouth.

"Book lovers find each other, sooner or later," Short said.

"And they've found These Words. I hope it turns into the "I can always get a good book there" store. That's all I really want."
