The regime of Chad Smith as Northview girls' basketball coach has been underway behind the scenes this summer as the team played in a league at Terre Haute South recently.
But this week, the annual youth camp is underway at North Clay for girls in grades first through ninth grade.
Smith is aided at the camp by junior varsity coach LuAnn Anderson who coached last season at Clay City High School.
While this year's numbers are down a bit, Smith feels that much of that is due to getting a bit of a late start.
"The numbers are a little lower than expected, but it was a little expected with the time frame in which I was hired. We didn't have as much time as we would have liked to hand out the camp flyers," Smith said.
But the key in Smith's mind is to work with the girls towards building a strong fundamental base for the future.
"I told the girls, that we're not trying to build a team, we're trying to build a program," commented the former Sullivan High School head man.
"We want to get this program to the point where we have to turn people away for this camp."
Regardless of the numbers at this point, Smith has hit the ground running with the summer league at working with the area's youth basketball players.
"We've got a lot of talented girls here," commented Smith.
"I'm really excited about the future of Northview basketball."
