After going 3-0 and advancing to the championship game of the double-elimination Babe Ruth Southwestern State Tourney, the CYL 15 All-Stars were flummoxed by South Gibson pitcher Mason Lingenfelter.
South Gibson needed to beat the Clay Youth League squad twice to win the title and they were able to do just that, getting seven scoreless innings over two victories from the lanky righthander.
Lingfelter got the start in the opening game and held the CYL hitless through four shutout innings while his team compiled a 13-0 victory.
In game two, the CYL bounced back to score a pair of runs over the first three innings off Matthew Stalbach to gain the early lead.
Roy Brown singled home Caleb Mason, who also singled, in the first inning to get the CYL's first run of the night. They added to that advantage in the third inning as Broc Potter doubled to lead off the frame and came around to score on an overthrow to third base.
South Gibson came back to tie the game on a single by Thomas Alvey, Sam Patton drew a walk before an infield single from Josh Sollman loaded the bases. CYL starter Cam Sanders got the first out by getting a grounder that forced Alvey at home. However, the relay throw to first from Roy Brown was low and skipped by Caleb Mason and Patton scored to make the score 2-1.
South Gibson was able to tie the score when Stalbach got himself into a rundown on the ensuing play and though he was eventually tagged out, Sollman was able to score before the inning's third out was scored.
Lingfelter returned to the mound in the fourth inning and was just as effective against the CYL. He allowed just one hit while striking out four batters.
Lingfelter helped himself at the plate by smacking a single to lead off the fourth inning and with two outs, Tyler Almon drew a walk and Cameron Holzmeyer tripled to bring both runs home.
Those scores would hold up as Lingfelter closed the CYL out down the stretch.
For the CYL squad, Derek Kennedy had a hit, Mason had two base hits and a walk in the second game and Brown added two hits. Sanders had a single base hit.
Clay Youth League 11's
The Clay Youth League 11-year old All-Star team won the state championship on Saturday with a pair of victories over Batesville, 11-1 and 9-0.
The CYL flexed their muscles and drilled seven home runs in the two games. Jim Mace smacked three of his own while Austin Butts added two roundtrippers and both Connor Pierce and Bo Stewart had hits. Stewart's shot was a grandslam.
The All-Stars advance to the Ohio Valley Regional where they will take on Michigan at Vincennes on Thursday at 6 p.m.
