Harriet Ellen Hicks, 86, Brazil, died at 8:55 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
Born Jan. 18, 1921, in Brazil, she was the daughter of Harvey E. and Ethel Maude King Hicks.
Following graduation from Brazil High School in 1939, she attended Indiana State Teacher's College (ISU), graduating in 1943. She was a beloved school teacher and librarian until her retirement in 1989. She taught two years at Beech Grove High School and then spent the next 44 years at Brazil High School and Northview High School. She continued her work at Northview High School as a volunteer in the library until 2000.
She was a member of numerous organizations, including Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Jackson Township Home Economics Club, and the Ladies Literary Society. She had attended the First Presbyterian Church of Brazil.
She enjoyed her beloved pets, gardening in her yard, genealogy, reading and sports. She enjoyed local high school sports so much that she worked at the high school basketball and football games in Brazil for 44 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by numerous friends, extended family members and a large "adopted" family, including Dr. John Mann, his wife Deborah, and their daughter Alison Mann-Shahane.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Moore Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Pippin officiating. Burial will follow at Cottage Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Moore Funeral Home.
