The second annual scholarship pageant for the Popcorn Festival of Clay County is approaching and the pageant committee is looking for Clay County girls between the ages of 17 and 22 to come join in the fun and excitement of being selected to not only reign over the activities of the festival, but also vie for scholarship monies to further their education.
This year's pageant will once again take place at 4:30 p.m., Aug. 25, at Traditions in downtown Brazil.
To get acquainted with everyone, the "Ladies of the Elks" have offered a tea party in their honor on Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on the main floor.
All applicants, along with their mother or sponsor, are encouraged to attend.
Last year, the inaugural pageant took place in April. However, the board of directors, along with the pageant's committee felt it needed to be moved closer to the time of the festival.
Last year's queen, Heather Palmer, went on to compete at the state level of the Indiana State Festival Association, placing third among 20 applicants for an additional scholarship.
Eleven girls graced the stage last year and competed for the judges in the following categories: Personal interview dressed in business attire during the daytime prior to the pageant, Evening Wear competition during the pageant and an on-stage impromptu question.
There will also be practice sessions to assist in interviewing skills, hair and makeup tips as well as learning a dance number for the opening of the pageant.
This year's pageant director, Melissa Medearis, will provide those interested in competing with help along the way as she was the first runner-up from last year.
"I would like to cordially invite any girl between the ages of 17 and 22 to run for the second annual Popcorn Festival Scholarship Pageant," Medearis said. "We will have a queen, first runner-up and a second runner-up and each will be rewarded a scholarship in the amount of $500 (queen), $300 (first runner-up) and $200 (second runner-up). The top three winners will also be a part of the festival.
Speaking not only as the director, but also as the first runner-up from last year, though the money helped, the part I enjoyed the most was being a part of the festival. I had so much fun, though I was not the queen, I was still highly involved in all of it and felt honored to be such."
Applications are available along with the rules and may be obtained from www.popcornfest.com, The Brazil Times lobby or by contacting Medearis at email@example.com. The entry fee of $25 along with the applications, current 5-by-7 photo and a transcript of a GPA are asked for.
All applications must be sent to Medearis by Aug. 10, 2007. They may be mailed to Popcorn Festival of Clay County, PO Box 403, Brazil, Ind., 47834 or to Melissa Medearis, 256 W. CR 750 N, Brazil, Ind., 47834.
