Vikings hit from outside and defeat Eels

Saturday, November 23, 2002

Clay City's early season struggles continued with a 50-42 defeat to Barr-Reeve on Friday evening.

The Eels were close all game long. After trailing by four at the halftime break, the Eels responded by outscoring the Vikings 15-12 in the third quarter to get within one point heading into the fourth period. However, the Vikings got six fourth quarter points by Jennifer Wirtz to hold off the Eels charge by outscoring them 15-8 in the last period.

Wirtz lead three Barr-Reeve players in double figures with 17 points. Teammate Kendra Hyatt had three 3-pointers as part of her 11 points and Alison Ash had 10 points.

Barr-Reeve was deadly from behind the arc against Clay City as four different players all had at least one 3-pointer. The Vikings had six in the game.

For Clay City, Freshman Whitney McWilliams and Jenna Koehler lead the team with 10 points apiece and Bryleigh Schopmeyer added a nice game with nine points and six boards. Amber Long had six assists and five rebounds. McWilliams also added four steals to go with Brittany Rood's three. The Eels had 11 as a team. However, they had turnover problems of their own.

Clay City committed 31 turnovers to lose their third straight close game to open the season.

Barr-Reeve also had the advantage from the free throw line as the Eels committed 17 team fouls leading to 17 Viking shots from the charity stripe. Barr-Reeve made 12 of those shots compared to just six for Clay City. Amber Long fouled out for the Eels.

On the positive side for Clay City was the fact that eight different players got on the scoreboard.

The Eels next game will be Monday at home against struggling Rockville at 6 p.m.
