Tough opponents await Knights in Bloomington

Friday, December 20, 2002

The Northview Knights head to Bloomington North High School this morning for the Bo Henry Classic beginning at 9 a.m.

The Knights will see their toughest competition to date when they square of with grapplers from Castle, Martinsville, Mooresville, Princeton and Terre Haute North along with the hosts.

Northview has several top seeded wrestlers with Austin Staley receiving the top spot in the 130 pound class. His 13-1 mark will earn him a bye into the second round versus either Daniel Walters of T.H. North (7-10) or Mitch Lowell of Castle (5-6).

At 103, Austin Nicosin is a third seed and will take his 9-2 mark into the second round after a bye. He will face the winner of Castle's Craig Spillman (3-2) and Josh Keen (14-5) of Bloomington North.

The 119 class should be one of the best of the afternoon. Northview's Corey Grigsby is a three seed with a 14-1 mark and faces Mooresville freshman Justin Malott who is 8-5. With a win, Grigsby could face one of two ranked opponents in this bracket.

Martinsville's T.K. Vandergrifft is rated as the No. 8 wrestler in the 112 pound class by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches' Association. Vandergrifft faces Bloomington North's Will Staley in the first round with Grigsby a possible second round opponent. In the other bracket is Clay Leek, who is the No. 4 ranked wrestler and brings a 10-0 mark into the Invitational. He receives a bye to the next round where he could face Paul McKee of Terre Haute North who is 15-2 this year.

At 140 pounds, Derek Mroczek brings a 13-1 record into his first round bout with the host school's Michael McClung who is 0-5 this year. With a win, Mroczek could face Jeff Ausenbaugh of Castle (10-1).

Brent Withers (4-8) gets a tough opening match at 145 with Jeremy Krulk of Martinsville who is 14-0 this year and Whitney King (3-11) faces Ben Lampkins of Castle (5-5) at 112. Nelson Norton makes his varsity debut this year at 125 and faces Steve Stafford of Martinsville (6-8). Keanon Dickson (0-2) matches up with Blaize Schmitt of Castle (8-3) in the 135 pound opener.

Another big match should be at 160 where Doug Porter (10-5) hits the mat against Princeton's Justin Walden (10-0). The 160 bracket is another difficult one as Marc Bennett of Martinsville (14-1) and T.H. North's Mark Hervey (15-2) also lie in wait along with Adam Steinzmetz of Bloomington North (14-5).

Jeremiah Allen (6-3) gets the call at 171 where he matches up with Bloomington North's Chris Underwood (7-11). Justin Wilson will likely see action at 189 for the Knights and could see Bloomington North's monster Heath Van Deventer, the IHSWCA No. 2 ranked opponent.

At 215, Tony Sambria (2-4) will face Jordan Ross of Princeton (7-3) and at heavyweight Tom Lucas (8-6) sees action versus Terre Haute North's Eric Atterson (13-2).

Saturday's Bo Henry Classic should provide some very intriguing and entertaining action with some wrestlers who could go deep into the state tournament later this season. Wrestling action begins at 9 a.m. sharp.
