On to Regionals for Northview grapplers

Monday, February 3, 2003

Derek Mroczek of Northview (holding leg) earned second place at the Owen Valley Sectional on Saturday.

SPENCER -- All in all, much of Saturday's Owen Valley Wrestling Sectional went according to plan for local wrestlers.

The Northview Knights came into the meet with four, number two seeds and took home three second place finishes on their way to a fifth-place team finish in the nine-team sectional.

Bloomington South, the state's No. 11 ranked school, ran away with the team title with 295.5 points to West Vigo's 176.5. The two schools will advance their teams to Wednesday's Seymour Regional. Owen Valley placed third, while Bloomington North was fourth, Sullivan sixth, Terre Haute North seventh, South eighth and Edgewood ninth.

But for the Knights, the day was a pretty solid peformance with six Knights moving on individually to regional competition next week.

Cory Grigsby might have been the highlight of the group with his second place finish to Bloomington South's Tyler Goble.

Goble came into the meet ranked seventh in the state at 119 pounds and boasted a 31-3 mark before the tournament, 33-3 headed into the title match with Grigsby. The Northview Knight was no slouch himself with a 26-5 overall mark, and 19-4 before the title match. Grigsby came away with a great deal of respect though after taking Goble to overtime before falling 6-4 by decision.

Derek Mroczek got his 30th win of he season and a ticket to Bloomington after advancing to the championship match before falling by pin to Bloomington South's Chris Branam (31-5).

At the 189-pound level Justin Wilson of Northview got a close look at one of the toughest nuts in the state to crack.

Wilson (26-10) advanced to the championship match with a pair of wins which earned him the right to face Bloomington North's Heath Van Deventer, the state's No. 2 ranked 189-pounder.

Van Deventer got the best of Wilson with a pin at the 2:45 mark to remain unbeaten this season at 37-0 and is a favorite for a state title later this postseason.

Besides Wilson, Mroczek and Grigsby, the Knights will also send Austin Nicosin who received fourth place after a forfeit in the third-place match versus Karl Schiefer of Bloomington South. Austin Staley will also advance with a third-place finish.

Staley got win number 30 this year when he decisioned Bloomington South's Kurt Kinser in the third-place match, 4-3.

Senior Nelson Norton continued a strong second half of the season with another third place for the Knights. His defeat of Bloomington North's Julias Hanks, 10-5, propelled him to regional competition.

Also for the Knights, Brent Withers concluded his season with a fifth place finish on Saturday. Withers pinned Michael McClung of Bloomington North at the 2:49 mark.

Doug Porter also earned a fifth-place with a major decision over Owen Valley's Craig Pahmeier, 10-2.

Tom Lucas picked up fifth with a pin of B.J. McCarty of Terre Haute North and Tony Sanabria was sixth at the 215 pound level.

Individual regional competition will be held at Bloomington South High School on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
