Mroczek and Grigsby headed to Semi-states

BLOOMINGTON -- Two Northview High School wrestlers are headed to the Evansville

semistate this week.

Cory Grigsby and Derek Mroczek earned the semistate berths on Saturday in regional competition at Bloomington South High School.

Grigsby finished second in the 119-pound class and Mroczek took third in 140 pounds to advance in the state tournament.

Northview's Grigsby, unofficially 30-7 on the year, lost a 3-0 decision to Bloomington South's Tyler Goble in the 119-pound title match.

Grigsby pinned Daniel Grace at 1 minute, 12 seconds in the first round of the tournament, then scored a 6-2 decision over Terre Haute South rival Carlo Balmaseda in the semifinals.

Mroczek, unofficially 32-7, scored a 14-1 win over Joel Yaney of

Bedford-North Lawrence in the consolation finals to earn a third place. In the opening round, Mroczek scored a 4-2 decision over Cody Metz of Columbus North, but was pinned in the semifinals at 2:55 by Michael Miller of Madison.

Austin Staley and Justin Wilson nearly joined them, but finished fourth in their respective weight classes.

Staley ran into Sullivan's Jade McCammon, the only regional

champion from the area, in the semifinals in the 130-pound semifinals.

Staley, 32-8 according to records posted at the regional, decisioned Robert Horn of Scottsburg in the first round. Staley was pinned by McCammon at 4:25 in the semifinals. In the consolation round for third place, Matt Dwyer of Columbus North won a 3-1 decision over Staley.

Wilson, with a final record of 27-12, opened his day at 189-pound with an impressive 41-second pin over Jesus Martinaz of Bedford-North Lawrence. But Columbus North's Orrin Kleinhenz pinned Wilson in the semifinals at 3:45. In the consolation round, Jenning County's Jeremy Jackson pinned Wilson at 2:50.

Austin Nicosin and Nelson Norton lost in the opening round. Tyler Ott of Columbus North scored a 16-2 decison over Nicosin in the opening 103-pound match. Madison's Corey Jones pinned Norton at 2:49 in the 135-pound contest.
