The battle of attrition otherwise known as girls' basketball regionals begins this Saturday with action across the state.
Sectionals have thinned the herd to the contenders with 16 regionals hosting a total of 64 teams. Weather has wreaked havoc on the original sectional schedules leaving some matchups still unknown, but of the ones that are set, regionals should be quite interesting.
In Class 4A, one of the most intriguing battles will be at Bedford North Lawrence High School where No. 4 ranked Mooresville (21-2) faces off with No. 6 ranked Bloomington North (21-2).
The teams have already met once with the Cougars handing the Pioneers a 61-60 defeat in what was quite a game for the two teams.
North's only two losses have come to teams with a combined 37-7 record. One of those squads was Pike who went down at the hand of North Central (Indianapolis) (18-6) who will face Lawrence North (15-8) in the Southport Regional. In the other Southport opening game, No. 8 Ben Davis (21-3) faces No. 9 Perry Meridian (21-4).
Top-ranked and undefeated Kokomo will face Carroll (Allen) in the Huntington North Regional.
In Class 3A, top-ranked and previously unbeaten Alexandria was knocked off in the sectional finals by Mt. Vernon (18-5) who will take on Shelbyville (19-4) in the Greenfield-Central Regional. In the other semifinal, No. 2 Beech Grove (24-1) will match up with Hamilton Heights (11-11). No. 3 North Harrison (23-0) will take on Edgewood (18-5) at the Jasper Regional alongside WIC foes Sullivan (14-8) who gets Evansville Memorial (20-4).
The Class 2A Speedway Regional will get to see the only No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup as top-ranked and once beaten Heritage Christian meets North Putnam (22-0). The winner of that game will get a date with the victor of the Batesville (17-5) and Montgomery (14-8) game.
In Single A, North Vermillion will place their 46 game unbeaten streak on the line at the Southwestern (Shelbyville) Regional versus Rising Sun (10-12), the winner will get a date with the winner of Morristown (13-10) versus White River Valley (18-5).
Regional action will begin at most sites at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the second games slated for approximately noon. The semifinal winners will face off for the right to advance to semistates at 8 p.m.
