The Owen Valley Patriots overcame freezing temperatures for a red-hot seventh inning rally to down Northview on the road on Tuesday evening.
The Knights held a 5-4 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning but the Patriots rallied for three runs and a 7-5 Western Indiana Conference victory despite head coach Trent Heckman's ejection in the sixth inning.
The Patriots took a 2-0 second inning lead off of Northview starter Jason Brown as Joe Frye and Levi Deckard scored on a pair of hits and a pair of Knight errors.
Northview rallied in the bottom half of the third inning as Jacob Jones singled and moved to second on an error and David Kingery drilled a double to the wall to score Jones.
Kingery would move to third on a pitch that got past Owen Valley catcher Jeff Keith. Designated hitter Ryan Hayes drove Kingery home with an infield single to the shortstop. He would eventually score from third on a slap single to right-centerfield to put the Knights ahead 3-2.
However, the Patriots would fight back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Brown would go four innings and be charged with four runs on three hits before giving way to left-hander Michael Stuckey in the fifth inning.
The Knights, trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, got right back into the mix starting with Jones once again.
Jones would reach first base on an error by Patriot shortstop Eli Deckard and steal second base before Owen Valley walked Kingery.
Hayes would foul out, but Jones and Kingery would execute a double-steal to move into scoring position setting up an excellent hustle play by Northview.
With C.J. Peters at-bat, Jones was sent from third base as pitcher Alex Wickerham went into his windup. Jones' speed and a well-timed dive to the plate got the Knights the run before Patriot catcher, Keith, could apply the tag.
Kingery would move to third on the play before Brady Shoemaker doubled him home with a shot to the wall. The pair of scores set Northview up 5-4 heading into the final frame.
Wickerham started the Patriot rally in the seventh with a single to leftfield before pinch-hitter Keith Sparks reached on a sac bunt attempt that was bobbled by the Knights.
Wickerham moved to second, then third on a Bever groundout that put both runners in scoring position with just one out.
Eli Deckard then stepped to the plate and knotted the score with a bloop single to shallow rightfield to score Wickerham.
Pitcher Laban Clark then helped his own cause by ripping a hard grounder off of Northview third baseman Shawn Hughes to score Sparks.
A single by Mike Jorgensen brought Deckard home to finish the scoring for Owen Valley. T.J. King closed the inning for Northview, getting the final two outs.
"Give them a lot of credit for coming back," said Northview coach Gary Witham. "We had a lot of opportunities with runners in scoring position and our defense was kind of shaky. We didn't play real smart."
The Knights (1-1 overall, 0-1 WIC) will face the Patriots at Spencer this evening at 5 p.m. Owen Valley will be without coach Heckman who was ejected Tuesday night for arguing a call. IHSAA rules mandate that a player or coach who is ejected in a game must also sit out the following game.
