The Northview softball team continued their march towards the top of the Western Indiana Conference standings as they completed a two-game sweep of the West Vigo Vikings on Wednesday evening.
After winning convincingly, 7-1 on Tuesday, the Knights looked ready to continue their hot hitting in the first inning, getting five hits in the first frame.
Jennifer Gregg singled with one out in the inning and came home on a Natalie Shoemaker triple to leftfield to give the Knights an early lead.
Shoemaker would then score as Chandra Burns smacked a double to centerfield.
When Millie Carr moved Burns to third with a single the Knights looked ready to bust the game wide open, but the Vikings would pick two runners off third in the inning to limit the damage to just two runs.
Those runs would prove to be invaluable as the Knights got just one more hit after the first inning. However, Northview senior Denae Whittington would hold the Vikings at bay, and hitless, for the first three innings.
"I'm really proud of Denae," commented coach Jason Wise. "She didn't have all of her stuff tonight, but to come out and battle like she did, she shut down a good ball team tonight."
Whittington held the Vikings in check until the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with just one out. However, Whittington was able to get out of the inning after allowing just one run as catcher Elise Sterrett made a nice catch against the fence on a foul ball that ended the threat.
The Vikings would threaten just once more when a pair of errors in the sixth inning put a pair of runners on with one out. Whittington was able to get a force out at third base and a groundout to retain the 2-1 lead that held up.
Whittington would allow just three hits over seven innings while walking two.
The Knights are now 14-3 overall and 8-2 in the WIC with a road game this evening at Bloomington North beginning at 5 p.m.
