CLAY CITY -- Errors will nearly always come back to haunt a team and that was certainly the case in Clay City on Monday evening.
The host Eels fell behind early as a pair of throwing errors allowed Bloomfield to take a 2-0 third inning lead, but the Cardinals returned the favor in the fifth and sixth innings with three errors that helped lead to three Clay City runs on the way to a 5-3 victory.
Trailing 2-0, the Eels knotted the score in the fourth inning as Kasi Thatcher was safe on a fielder's choice that recorded the inning's second out. However, Jenna Koehler walked and Loni Rhodes followed with a double to score both runners.
The Eels would take the lead the following inning as Christina Haymaker singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Kari Bettenbrock reached first base on an error that moved Haymaker to third. She would then score on a Lacy Brown single to put the Eels ahead 3-2.
However, the Cardinals came right back, taking advantage of a pair of miscues by Clay City.
Whitney Gott singled and with one out Christie Shartzer sharply hit a ball to first that Cameron Gerber couldn't handle. Billye Maden came to the plate and hit a grounder to second base, but the throw was wild and Gott scored on the overthrow.
Bloomfield had fielding and throwing problems of their own in the sixth inning and they cost them a shot at the game.
Lindsay Moss reached on an error and Haymaker singled her to second before Gerber dropped a single on the rightfield line that scored Moss. The relay throw home was wild and Haymaker came home to score as well.
Bettenbrock allowed seven hits on the mound wile striking out six and walking none.
The Eels moved to 8-7 overall this season with a 4:30 contest with Eastern on Thursday.
