Lady luck was decidedly against the Northview softball team on Tuesday night as they were ousted by defending champion Bloomington South, 10-2, in the opening round.
The Panthers will move on to face Terre Haute North, a 10-0 winner versus Mooresville in Tuesday's opening contest.
For the Knights though, the first inning was certainly a sign of things to come in the rest of the game.
The leadoff batter for South hit a solid grounder to Northview shortstop Kayla Glassburn who lifted her glove a second too soon to allow Cara Snyder to reach on the error.
The Knights got back on track with a groundout that moved Snyder to second but back-to-back-to-back singles would score a pair of runs in the inning.
The Knights, who have lately struggled to score runs, got one run back in the second inning from a single by Chandra Burns and a walk by Brittnee Yocom. Erica Koehler's single to center would score the first Northview run.
The Panthers did most of their damage in the third inning.
Jenna Abbott lead off with a double and cleanup hitter Sara Johnson was intentionally walked to set up the force out. However, a groundout moved the pair into scoring position followed by a Lyndsey Kinser single that scored Abbott. That would do it for senior starting pitcher Denae Whittington who concluded an excellent Northview career.
Fellow senior Erin Brackney came from behind the plate to take the mound and didn't have much more success.
Stevie Deckard greeted her with a line single off her glove that scored a pinchrunner. An error on a rundown play between first and second would allow another run to score. After another pair of singles and two errors on one play, the Panthers had scored six runs on five hits and three Northview errors to go up 8-1.
The Knights were never able to recover as the Panthers played excellent defense on every hard hit Northview ball and a couple of baserunning mistakes took the Knights out of possible scoring opportunties.
The Knights did get one more run in the fifth inning as Glassburn singled and later scored on a Natalie Shoemaker double. However, despite nine hits, the Knights could tally just the pair of runs against South.
The Knights finish their season at 15-9 a marked improvement from last season. Whittington, Brackney and Millie Carr will each graduate from the team this season after great seasons and careers with the Knights.
