After all was said and done in Thursday's Evansville Central Track Regional, just one Clay County competitor will move on to the State Finals held on June 6 at Michael Carroll Track and Field Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.
After winning both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races at the Terre Haute North Sectional last week, Northview's Bryce Smith was able to advance with a second place finish in the 1,600 on Thursday evening.
Smith ran a 4:26.13, his best time this season, to take second behind North Central's Josh Rogers who was second to Smith in the sectional. Smith defeated Rogers in sectionals by eight seconds with his time of 4:26.48.
In the 3,200 meter race, Smith was unable to advance with his seventh place finish in the Regional. He crossed the line with a time of 10:22.32. Nick Waninger of Heritage Hills won the race with a time of 9:42.45.
Northview junior Matt McClellan came out of sectionals with a second place finish in the 200 meter dash. His time of 23.25 was just behind Terre Haute South's Mike Burger who ran a 23.24 to win. On Thursday, McClellan was just slightly off his sectional time to place sixth in 23.44 while Burger did not make the finals. Frank Tichenor of Gibson won the event with a 22.13.
In the 400 meters, Clay City's Elliott Booe placed 10th in the Regional event with his time of 52.91 which was a bit off of his second place sectional finish behind Terre Haute North junior Mike Russell. The Patriot runner finished fifth in regionals while Castle's Gary Ogburn was first in a time of 49.77.
South's John Lambertus bettered his sectional winning time of 1:57.62 in the 800 meters on Thursday and he needed every bit of his 1:57.60 to win the event in Evansville.
In the high jump, Booe placed 11th by clearing 5-10, the same height he needed to tie for second in sectional competition. Adam Campagna of Castle cleared 6-5 to win the regional.
Shawn Piatt took third place by clearing 12-0 in the sectional meet but fell off just slightly with his 11-6 in the regional. The height was good to enough to earn him 12th place.
Northview sophomore Michael Landry was fourth in sectionals, and took 11th overall with his leap of 19-0 1/2 in the Evansville meet.
Northview's 4X400 relay team crossed the line in 3:38.82, good enough for eighth place after taking fourth in the sectional.
Northview's Smith will join his teammate Nikki Royer in competing at IUPUI next week. Royer will compete in the woman's pole vault.
