- Akers currently in 5th place
Travis Smith continued his strong play Wednesday after an opening round 69 on Tuesday in the Terre Haute City Junior Championship.
Smith will head into Thursday's round at Rea Golf Course with a three shot lead over Matt Sherertz after carding a 73 at Hulman Links on Wednesday morning. Sherertz actually gained a stroke on Smith after shooting a 72 at Hulman, setting a battle for the Championship Flight title that will include Matt Cain who has rounds of 71 and 76 for a total of 147, Matt Payne who has shot a 153 and Northview's Tyler Akers who followed an opening 74 with an 80 at Hulman Links for a total of 154.
Smith who topped the First Flight as a 15-year old last year has his eyes on the top spot this year as does defending Junior Open titlist, Terre Haute South senior Kelli Holloway, who is in second place after Northview senior Amy Thiemann fired an 85 on Wednesday morning. The round followed her 76 at Rea Golf Course which matched Holloway's score. However, Thiemann will take a three-shot lead into the Championship flight on Thursday morning.
The pair are followed by Jennifer Dragan, who graduated from Northview this Spring, who scored a 173 through two rounds, and Diana Price who has a score of 182. The four will tee-off for the Championship Flight at 9:57 a.m. on Thursday morning.
In the boys' 15-17 age group, Akers will be joined in the Championship Flight by Northview teammates Austin Schutte (160), Devin Whittington (162) and Kyle Kumpf (162).
Thiemann will also be joined by familiar faces as Brittney Cheek shot a two round score of 187, Amber Trusler scored a 202 along with Jenae Huffman (214), Madison Kirchner (205) and Maggie Kirchner (214).
In other groups, Darren LaForce tops the boys' 13-14 age group Championship Flight with his two round score of 160. He is followed closely by Jordan Mayfield (161) and Phillip Myers (165).
In the girls' 13-14 group, Rachel Pruett shot a 171 to comfortably lead ahead of Whitney Crowley (189) and Millie Akers (211).
The Championship Flight of the boys' 11-12 age group should go down to the wire with Harrison Carmichael leading with a 162 while James Ellis (165), Austin Akers (166) and Kade Baker (167) are closely behind.
Bree Opremechek is on top of the 11-12 year old girls' group with a 258 while Shelby Stewart (86) leads the 10-and-under group ahead of Dylan Reyher (88) and Nathan Pirtle (88).
Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. at Rea Golf Course with the First Flight of the boys' 15-17 age group while the 10-and-under group will tee-off of the back-nine.
