The 2003 soccer season began on Saturday afternoon as the Northview Knights competed at the Terre Haute North soccer jamboree.
The Knights faced the host Patriots and West Vigo Vikings over the span of two different 20 minute periods. The girls squad were able to capitalize on one scoring opportunity as Cecilia Latta placed home a shot in the second period. The feed came from Elise Sterrett and Shonna Barnett at the 5:16 mark of the period.
The Northview girls gave up the lone goal of their first period match with North when Patriot freshman Erin Pugh stole the ball and fed Rachel Ourand whose shot rebounded back to Pugh for the score.
"We've got some things we need to work on before our game versus North on Thursday," commented Northview coach Don Bryan. "But it's good to finally get things going and get on the field especially after ending the summer with such a shock."
What Bryan referred to was what will certainly be the Knights biggest loss on or off the field this season. The loss of a friend.
All-WIC stopper and Northview senior-to-be Kellyn Andrews was killed in an automobile accident 12 days ago and she was remembered with a moment of silence before the game.
Her position, according to Bryan, will be one of the hardest to fill. "It's going to take awhile to find someone to take that spot," noted Bryan. "She played that position so well, but we have several girls who are working very hard to help in that position."
The Knights do return All-WIC player Cecilia Latta who led the team in shots taken with 102 last season and goals with nine.
The offense should certainly be solid as Northview returns 23 of 31 goals scored last year. Latta returns as the goal leader with Shonna Barnett (5), Rachel Deal (4) and Kelsey Haring (3) expected fill in for the graduation loss of Jessica Walden.
Kelsey Scroggins will be an important cog in the defense at the fullback/stopper position. She tallied 45 steals behind only Andrews last year. Deal added another 34.
Bethany Fagg returns in goal for the Knights after helping lead Northview to their best win total in school history (8) and the first sectional victory for the team. She posted four shutouts last year and has a total of six in two years and made the All-WIC team last year.
With the Knights returning 12 of 19 players who got more than 200 minutes of playing time last year hopes are high that Northview can increase upon their season record for wins and second place conference record.
"All of these girls worked hard in the offseason and I think we're definitely headed in the right direction," noted Bryan.
The Knights open their regular season with a game versus Terre Haute North at home on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
