Boys squad will mix youth with experience

Monday, August 18, 2003

Northview's boys team will rely on a mix of young players such as freshman defender Taylor Libinski (#4) and veterans like junior Brock Crooks (#21) to put together big seasons for the Knights.

The Northview boys' soccer program got to test their legs as well on Saturday afternoon as coach Todd LaComba attempts to build on a solid season last year.

His efforts won't be easy however as the Knights graduated four starters from last year including all-WIC players Tim Strader and Chris Short on defense and Jeremy Lankston in the midfield along with leading goal scorer Dan Roeschlein. Also gone are John Reeves and Jordan Brown who also graduated.

However, according to LaComba, the squad will surprise a lot of people this year. "We have seven core seniors with a lot of experience," noted LaComba. "We have quite a large group of freshman (seven) and I think it will be good to mesh the younger guys with the older ones."

Speed will also come into play more this year than others according to LaComba. "This is the fastest team I've ever had. I just wish that I had some of the speed these kids have. We're getting some good combo play up top with our more experienced players so it's just a matter of working in the younger players to get them in the mix."

The Knights looked solid on the defensive end versus Terre Haute North during their Saturday jamboree, especially freshman keeper Taylor Montague who made some point blank saves of shots by Patriot senior Andy Jones.

On both sides of the ball the Knights will need time to gel with a lot of experienced players lost through graduation. "We did lose a lot of production," mentioned LaComba. "But we have some seniors this year, who as juniors, were quiet. This year they've taken over and really shown the leadership that is important."

The preview of North could help alleviate the jitters that some of the younger athletes might have felt taking the field on Tuesday when the Patriots visit for the season opener at 5 p.m.

But with seniors Stephen Stewart, Dustin Jorgensen, Shawn Piatt, Kraig McClellan, Jason Short, Neil Brown and goalie Mitch Mershon returning, the Knights should have a good foundation for the youngsters to build upon.
