After being able to relish a victory over the team that downed them in sectional play last year, the Northview tennis squad was brought back to Earth by a talented Danville Warrior team on Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights continue to play well in singles action as both Cody Melega and Shawn Hughes fought for three set victories.
Melega won his No. 2 singles match after falling 7-6 (7-2) in the first set tie break. He came back for a 6-4 win in set two before finishing off Kyle Whisler with a 6-2 third set clincher.
Hughes also lost his first set, his by a 6-4 count. But he also displayed a measure of determination to come back for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brock Miller.
However, Tyler Akers was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in his No. 1 singles match with James Humphrey. "Tyler (Akers) took several games to deuce," said coach Tim Davis. "But he was taking it to the net and (James) Humphrey was hitting some great passing shots. There wasn't much Tyler could do. Cody (Melega) and Shawn (Hughes) continued to grow with their three set matches. It helps to play those close matches," noted Davis.
The Knights weren't able to win either of the doubles matches as the team of Stefan Kiefer and Ben Mitchell dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Ryne Foster and Nathan Phipps of Danville. Jacob Talbot and Jeremy Smith fell 6-1, 6-1 to Jake Fields and Derek Bant. "Their number one doubles team was pretty solid," said Davis.
The loss leaves the Knights with a 2-2 overall record heading into next week's match on Wednesday versus Linton at 5 p.m.
