Knights debut course with wins

Wednesday, August 27, 2003

Justin Scherb (far left) and Josh Timm (middle right) lead a pack of runners downhill during Tuesday's home meet for the Knights. Timm finished third in the meet while Scherb was fifth as the boys team won the meet.

On Tuesday afternoon the Northview cross-country teams finally got the opportunity to officially christen their new home at Craig Park versus outside competition.

The Knights made their opening night one to remember as both the girls and boys continued their unbeaten dual meet streak that has stretched to nearly four years.

The girls downed second place Brown County 26 to 40 while Owen Valley took third with 58 points and Shakamak was fourth with 105. The boys team squeaked past an always tough Eagles team by a 27-32 margin with Shakamak placing third with 78 points and Owen Valley incomplete.

Emily Pugh took the top spot in the girls race with a time of 16:26 which will open as the course record. Shandra Kirby took third in a time of 17:23 while Kim Deakins was sixth in 18:09 and Nikki Royer was seventh (18:17). Mary Pugh was ninth in 18:45. Emilee Lutes finished in 16th, Jeri Jo Mogan was 17th and Brit Hofmann was 21st.

Brown County took the top two spots in the boys race as Josiah Garvey crossed the finish line in 17:37 followed by Will Adams in 17:45. Josh Timm lead the Northview contingent with a time of 18:00 flat. In fourth place overall was Matt Brand in 18:15 and Justin Scherb took fifth in 18:26. Cam King was seventh followed by Jarrod Reece in eighth. Kyle Thompson rounded out the top-10. T.J. Black took 16th in 20:01, Nick Colwell ran a 20:21 while Kyle Colson and Logan Wegner finished in 20:23 and Hunter Reberger finished in 20:38.

According to boys' coach Jeff Gambill, defeating Brown County was a good measuring stick for this year's Northview squad. "I think that this was one meet where, doing well against Brown County is a good indicator of the team. We're going to get a lot better, our times especially" said Gambill. "Our top-five all improved their times from the first meet. I thought that Nick Colwell and T.J. Black both had great meets."

The Knights improve to 2-0 this season with their next match coming on Tuesday at North Central versus the Thunderbirds and Terre Haute South at 5 p.m.

Boys team score: Northview 27, Brown County 32, Shakamak 78, Owen Valley Inc.
