Tiger Cubs defeat Knights on the hardcourt

Wednesday, September 10, 2003

GREENCASTLE -- Northview's Shawn Hughes was the only Knight to pick up a victory on Tuesday.

The Knights traveled to Greencastle in the hopes of picking up their third win of the season but Northview was stifled by the Tiger Cubs, 4-1.

Hughes -- a junior -- picked up Northview's lone victory, defeating Clay Compton at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

In other singles' action, Tyler Akers fell to Jeremy Wilson at No. 1, 6-1, 7-5, and Cody Melega dropped a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 hard-fought match at No. 2 singles to Will Cath.

"In Tyler's match, he got down in the first set and (Wilson) really played off of that," Northview head coach Tim Davis said. "I thought he was going to come back but it didn't happen."

"(Akers) had a really hard first serve," Greencastle coach Mary Kay Huse said. "But (Wilson) did a good job of blocking it."

In doubles' action, Greencastle's No. 1 tandem of Chris Torrence and Ryan Pettijohn defeated Jeremy Miller and Jacob Talbot, 6-0, 6-0, and the Tiger Cubs' No. 2 duo of Alex Nemchonok and Danny Oliver defeated Stefan Kiefer and Alex Smith, 6-3, 6-0.

Torrence and Pettijohn were the first players off the court on Tuesday, followed by Nemchonok and Oliver.

"Their doubles are probably the most solid we've seen (this season)," Davis said of Greencastle.

"Our doubles are very strong," Huse said.

In junior varsity action, Northview's Ben Mitchell dropped an 8-1 set to Quinn Fenlon.

The Knights (3-3) will face Western Indiana Conference foe Sullivan at home on Thursday at 5 p.m.
