Huggler registers course record despite Patriot win

Friday, October 3, 2003

CLAY CITY -- Clay City's Andy Huggler has come close to the course record on his home turf, but has narrowly missed. That is until Thursday evening.

Huggler went out hard against a tough Terre Haute North squad and held on at the end for a strong 16:50 that lowered an eight-year old course record at Clay City High School.

Huggler lowered the time by five seconds on his way to the individual victory on Thursday, 23 seconds ahead of North's top runner, Rob Rhoads who finished in 17:13.

The Patriots however used a strong front pack of runners to take a 20-39 team victory as Josh Bedford placed third followed by Erik Hamilton in fourth, Todd Dason in fifth, Jaden Brown in sixth and Tyler Anderson in seventh place.

Dusty Souder was the next fastest finisher for the Eels with a time of 17:56 and Jared Schlak took ninth with a time of 17:57 and David Schroer in 10th with a time of 18:00.

Camrand Tucker, Adam Schroer and Jared Defore were the next group of finishers for the Eels.

In the girls meet, the Patriots took the top three official spots with Kathleen Smith placing first in 16:44, followed by Kayla Alexander in 17:20 and Anna Claretto in 17:33.

Lacey Rood crossed in 18:04 as the first official varsity runner for the Eels with Elizabeth Effner close behind in 18:10, good for fifth place overall.

Clay City's Alisha Drake wasn't eligible for varsity contention on Thursday, but ran a time of 17:21.

The meet ended the regular season for Clay City with the Southwestern Indiana Conference meet to be held next Thursday in Lyons beginning at 4:30 p.m.
