It took nearly a full season for the Northview boys soccer team to hit full strength and though they aren't completely there yet, they showed offensive and defensive punch they are capable of on Monday evening.
The Knights celebrated Senior Night with a dominating 7-0 white-washing of visiting Monrovia in their final regular season game before sectional action next Monday.
Northview took charge early in this one and didn't let up versus an outmanned Bulldogs squad.
Stephen Stewart put the Knights on the board early when Monrovia's goal keeper bobbled a shot. Stewart didn't give up on his run to the net and capitalized when the ball got loose from the keeper. Stewart's tally was the first of three on the night for the senior and was the first of many strikes for the Knights.
"These guys were really pumped up tonight," commented coach Todd LaComba. "With all the ties we've had this season, we finally lived up to our potential."
Stewart got the second goal for the Knights as well when at the 33:20 mark, just two minutes after his first strike, he received a Dustin Jorgensen pass, beat his defender and fired across the goal to the corner for a 2-0 Northview advantage.
"Stephen (Stewart) and Shawn (Piatt) really handled the ball well for us," mentioned LaComba. "They used their speed to create chances."
Piatt, another Northview senior, made several nice runs on goal during the first half and just missed a couple of headers off of Neil Brown corner kicks.
The Knights came close on numerous shots in the first half but took just a 2-0 lead into the halftime break. But they exploded in the second half.
Just seven minutes into the second half Northview's Jorgensen found himself alone with the keeper and fired home the Knight's third goal of the evening. Stewart then got his third goal of the evening when he fought off a defender for a goal at the 29:41 mark.
Less than a minute later, Piatt got on the board when he took on a Monrovia defender near midfield and passes the ball to himself through the defenders legs and found net on a long shot to the far post.
Jacob Andrews and Matt Wright would finish off the game with goals for Northview.
Piatt added two assists to his goal on Monday and senior Kraig McClellan had a pair of assists along with a couple of near-misses on goals on the night. And senior Mitch Mershon went nearly 60 minutes of shutout time in goal before being relieved in net by freshman Taylor Montague. Mershon would get an assist in the game.
"Wade (Thacker) and Brock (Crooks) really anchored our defense," mentioned LaComba. "This win really helps our confidence heading into the sectional game."
The Knights will face Terre Haute South in Monday's game at 7 p.m. Northview will be playing in the Terre Haute North Sectional.
