The Northview girls soccer team geared up for sectional play by defeating the West Vigo Vikings 4-0 in their final regular season contest.
The Knight's win was especially noteworthy for two reasons, the biggest reason being that the Vikings will be their first round sectional opponent a week from Thursday at 7 p.m.
Senior Cecilia Latta got her squad on the board just 17 seconds into the game when she drilled home a penalty kick against West Vigo keeper Hayley Sullivan.
The score would set a tone for the Knights who seemed to smell blood early and wouldn't let up against their WIC opponent.
Ten minutes later, Latta would pass forward to a charging Erin Whitmore just outside the box. Whitmore drilled a low hard shot from the right, but Sullivan made the save.
Less than two minutes later however, Latta brought the ball up to the midline before finding Rachel Deal along the sideline with some space. Deal would thread a pass forward to find Whitmore in full stride with a one-on-one chance with the keeper.
Whitmore would put home the shot in the corner for a 2-0 Northview lead at the 24:45 mark of the first half.
With just over 10 minutes remaining in the half, Deal and Whitmore were once more the catalysts for a score as Deal moved the ball up to Whitmore at the top of the box before sliding a pass to the left side for Shonna Barnett who sliced a shot to the left corner and a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Knights dominated play in the midfield with a physical West Vigo squad. Northview was able to play the same game with the Vikings and keep West Vigo's midfield from staying on the ball or making concerted progress into Northview's zone.
They continued their efforts in the second half as Cassie Webb just missed heading a ball in off a corner kick three minutes into the half. But the Vikings would stave off the Knights until the final minutes as Whitmore tallied her second goal off a feed from Barnett and made a nice run before scoring the Knight's fourth and final goal.
"We had some good teamwork," commented coach Don Bryan. "We had lots of good hustle and I think we finally saw what they are capable of."
For Northview, Latta had a goal and an assist while Whitmore chipped in two goals and an assist with Barnett getting a goal and an assist and Deal adding two assists.
Whitmore topped the team with six shots while Latta added three and Bethany Fagg had seven saves in goal for the Knights.
Marsha Krisenko led the team with five steals and Kelsey Scroggins had four more.
The Knights (6-10-1 overall, 3-2 WIC) will get another crack at the Vikings with the season on the line next Thursday at Terre Haute South High School following the South Vermillion versus Terre Haute North game.
