SEELEYVILLE -- Northview's girls cross-country team just keeps getting stronger this season and Saturday was no exception.

The Knights placed second as a team, 27 points behind 18th-ranked Bloomington South, to move on to the Indiana High School State Cross-country meet on Saturday at Indiana University's Cross-country course in Bloomington.

Along with the girls' squad, Justin Scherb will also move on from the boys' team after placing ninth overall in his race.

Every Northview girl ran a considerably better time in Saturday's Semi-State race at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course than they did two weeks ago on the same course in the Terre Haute North Sectional.

Leading the way for the Knights was Emily Pugh who placed 12th for Northview with her time of 15:16.

Heather Stembridge of Evansville Central was the individual winner of the girls race. Stembridge crossed the line in 14:28 to defeat Patience Meyer of Switzerland County by 20 seconds.

Pugh led the Knights girls to their best performance of the season by dropping a remarkable 42 seconds off her time from a sectional race that was run in windy, chilly conditions. Shandra Kirby placed 28th for Northview with a time of 15:46, a minute and 11 seconds better than her previous time on the course. Mary Pugh was just behind Kirby with a time of 15:47 for 29th place. Her Semistate time was a minute better than two weeks ago and Nikki Royer was 64th in 16:31 while Kim Deakins was 100th in 17:01. Brit Hoffman dropped a minute and 40 seconds to place 157th and Emily Lutes was 152nd.

In the boys race, Justin Scherb led the way with his ninth place finish in 16:30 followed by Josh Timm in 32nd place with his time of 16:58.

The Knights placed eighth as a team as Mount Vernon ran away with the team title with just 68 points, placing three runners in the top 15 overall.

Bloomington North's Max Gustanitis ran a 15:49 to defeat Chris McGrew of Martinsville by 10 seconds.

Matt Brand was 64th in 17:28 while Cam King was 90th, Ryan Thompson was 96th, Jarrod Reece was 126th and Hunter Reberger was 141st.

Scherb will be making his third trip to the state finals in three years for the Knights after missing last year's season with a leg injury.

Terre Haute North's boys team will also advance with their fifth place finish.

The Indiana High School Cross-Country State Championships will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
