North a head up at Jamboree

Saturday, November 22, 2003

TERRE HAUTE -- During Friday night's boy's basketball jamboree it was obvious among nearly everyone the team that stood out above the others

The Terre Haute North Patriots.

The team that seemed to have the toughest road to follow after losing their top scorer from a year ago in Matt Blank.

After Friday night's performance the varsity scorebook likely won't be missing the 'Blank' name for long as his brother, a 6'4 freshman, scored 12 points on five-of-eight shooting.

"Terre Haute North is awfully good," commented Northview head coach Mitch Lancaster. "They ran a clinic (Friday) and we just stood there and took it."

Lancaster got a close look at the Patriots in the second quarter of Friday night's Jamboree format that saw Terre Haute South play West Vigo in the opening quarter with the Patriots and Knights facing off in the second period. In the third quarter the Braves and Patriots went at it and the Vikings and Knights faced each other in the final quarter. On the scoreboard, the Knights and Braves' scores were combined versus the Patriots and Vikings.

Opening the game, the Braves manhandled the Vikings with a 22-2 explosion based a great deal on South's aggressive, athletic defense.

South senior Michael Shouse scored seven in the opening quarter as the Braves held West Vigo to an zero-for-15 performance from the field.

Cue the Patriots to come in and erase that lead.

North looked to be in midseason form with a roster that includes just one player who played football this season.

The Patriots defense forced Northview into a variety of off-balance shots in the lane and limited them to just nine shots in the period.

Meanwhile North was breaking down Northview's defenders who left their feet time and again for blocks that left other Patriots open in the lane. "Some of our kids think they are shotblockers," commented a displeased Lancaster. "We were lunging and reaching for the ball too much tonight. They laid a flat whipping on us tonight."

Blank stepped in and scored eight points for the Patriots in the quarter as they outscored Northview 21-8 in the period and forced the Knights into eight turnovers in the quarter. The Patriots also shot 56 percent (nine-of-16 FG) from the field to close the gap to 30-23 at the halftime break.

South and North squared off in the next period with the Patriots once again getting the best of their opponent.

North controlled the paint and forced South into a two-of-nine performance from the field, including five misses from beyond 3-point range. The Patriots however hit five of their 10 shots and got to the line seven times for six charity tosses and an 18-7 advantage in the period.

North sophomore Steven Jeffers tied the score on a jumper with 5:20 left and Wendell Mardis closed the period by hitting three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc.

The Patriots middle period dominance left the Knights in charge of clawing back from a 41-37 deficit.

They would accommodate their fans with their offense as they outscored West Vigo 21-12 to get the combined victory.

Logan Whitman led all scorers in the Jamboree with 14 points on six-of-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers. Zach Keyes was next with four for the Knights.

But the Knights still have some problems to deal with according to Lancaster. "We're not in shape yet," he commented. "We have a long way to go to show people that we're the quality team they think we are. If we don't feel humbled then we definitely should. (Terre Haute North's) kids have practiced year round and it definitely shows."

The Knights will see regular season action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 when they visit county rival Clay City.
