Brown County holds off late Lady Knights rally

Monday, December 8, 2003

Northview guard Amy Thiemann (#24) looks to pass to an open teammate during Saturday's game versus Brown County.

The Northview Knights, battling illness for the past couple of weeks, were forced to also take on Brown County on Saturday night.

The combination was simply too much for the Knights who dropped a 42-35 decision to the visiting Golden Eagles.

With starters Whitney Medworth and Erica Koehler each struggling to shake various ailments, Laura McCrea came up with big baskets in keeping Northview close despite shooting a horrendous 17 percent (four-of-24) in the first half

McCrea had a pair of baskets in the first half to keep the Knights within nine points at the halftime break.

In the second half, Northview got within five points to end the third quarter, putting together a 7-0 run to end the period.

Amy Thiemann picked up a rebound basket and Julie Whitted scored back-to-back hoops before Medworth ended the quarter by knocking down a 3-pointer off a Brown County turnover.

Whitted would open the final period with a pair of free throws to close the gap to 25-22 but Brown County junior guard Mara Freyshour was simply too much down the stretch.

Freyshour rang up nine first quarter points but was held to just two points over the middle two quarters. However, she would handle the ball for much of the fourth period, forcing the Knights to foul late in the game. She would hit all eight of her free throw attempts in the quarter to end with a game-high 19 points for the Eagles.

The Knights would creep to within four points several times of the last quarter, but each time, the Eagles came through with an answering basket to hold off the weary Knights.

Whitted led Northview in scoring with a 14 points, 13 rebound evening but Medworth was held to just three-of-15 shooting and Koehler was held scoreless in the contest. McCrea added eight points for the Knights.

For the game, Northview shot just 25 percent (13-of-51) from the field.

The Knights (4-3 overall) will have the week to get healthy before facing a winless West Vigo (0-8 overall) squad on Friday night as part of a boy-girl doubleheader.
