- Knights fall short in pair of losses at Hall of Fame Classic

NEW CASTLE -- In Saturday's Hall of Fame Classic contests, the Northview Knights saw perhaps two of the tournament's best individual performances. Unfortunately for them, neither of them came in victories for the Knights.

In Saturday's opener versus top-ranked Lawrence North, senior Logan Whitman tied a Classic record, held by former IU star Tom Coverdale, with seven 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 33 points. But the effort came in a loss to the Wildcats who got 23 points from 7-foot sophomore Greg Oden and 15 from Mike Conley on the way to the victory.

In the consolation contest versus White River Valley, who dropped a 55-43 decision to Columbia City in their opener, senior Wolverine A.J. Graves scored a Classic record 45 points and got the game-winning basket on a steal and layup with just three seconds remaining. Whitman, who scored 28 of his own points in the game, missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in the 80-78 defeat.

Both Graves and Whitman were nominated to the All-tournament team along with Columbia City's Marcus Moore and Douglas Sheckler and Lawrence North's Mike Conley. Oden won the tournament MVP award after a 23 point effort in the championship game.

For the Knights (7-2 overall) the afternoon started with a physical battle with the Wildcats that saw the Knights get to the free throw line just five times compared to 34 for Lawrence North. The translation was an 18 point advantage from the free throw line for the Wildcats who built a 12 point halftime lead and held that margin for the win.

Whitman scored 33 points while Zach Keyes added 15 and Josh Timm tallied 11 for the Knights.

The consolation game versus the Wolverines was perhaps the most thrilling of the day with neither team leading by more than six points in the game.

Both squads put on a remarkable first half shooting display with Northview hitting 65 percent (15-of-23) of their shots from the field and the Wolverines shooting 56 percent (15-of-27). Even more impressive was the 3-point shooting from each side. The Knights, led by Whitman, hit six-of-nine from long range while Graves hit four-of-five in the half and the team hit six-of-10 in total.

But the story was Graves, who was unstoppable in the game.

He would score 20 of his team's 25 points in the fourth quarter on the way to beating another former IU star, Delray Brooks, who scored 40 points for Michigan City Rogers in 1983's Classic.

Graves hit eight-of-10 fieldgoals in the decisive fourth quarter and was responsible for getting his team back into the game when it looked as if the Knights were set to pull away.

With 3:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, Matt Brand put Northview ahead 70-67 when the Wolverines turned the ball over and Whitman fired a pass to Brand under the basket for the basket and foul.

The Knights would then go up 72-67 when Keyes scored and the Knights would get the ball back after a WRV missed field goal attempt.

With the opportunity to firmly take control with a basket, Graves stole the ball from Whitman who had pulled down the rebound from senior Jordan Schantz's missed shot. Graves would lay the ball back in to narrow the gap to 72-69 before Whitman hit a runner in the lane to move the lead back to five points. But then it was Graves' turn to take over.

His 3-pointer and leaner in the lane knotted the score at 74-apiece late before a flurry of baskets, the last by Keyes, gave Northview their last advantage at 78-76.

A defensive breakdown gave Graves a wide open lane to the basket in the Wolverine's next possession and the basket tied the score with nine seconds remaining setting up Northview for the potential last shot of the game.

A Northview timeout was called, setting up an inbounds play at midcourt for a chance to win for the Knights. But Graves would come up with his biggest play of the day when he deflected the inbounds pass from Whitman who slipped to the ground and Graves drove in for the winning-layup. Whitman's last attempt hit the rim and the Wolverine's had the victory.

Whitman was the tournament's leading scorer with a combined 61 points in the games while Graves was second with 54 total points. Oden added 45 for the Wildcats who went to double-overtime to get the championship game victory over the Columbia City Eagles.

The Knights will be back in action on Jan. 9 at home versus Owen Valley.
