With fans, coaches and athletes all celebrating Senior Night for Northview's wrestling team, results were mixed over the course of the evening.

All three Northview senior wrestlers enjoyed victories against Greencastle during the dual match, however, the team came out on the short end of a 42-33 team decision on Thursday night.

"I'm just really happy with the way our seniors wrestled tonight," commented coach Dan Mikesell of his Knights. "It would have been nice to get the dual meet victory, but I'm glad that the seniors got their wins."

Austin Staley, Derek Mroczek and Doug Porter each picked up important victories in keeping Northview close until the final matches.

Staley grabbed a very solid win over Greencastle freshman Chris Pingleton, 5-1. "(Pingleton) was pretty good," commented Staley after picking up his school-record 106th career victory. "I wrestled a little timid tonight. I wrestled not to get beat instead of trying to win. I have to be a little more aggressive on my feet."

Fellow senior Mroczek kicked off the meet on a high note for the Knights, taking a 5-3 first period lead and building up to a 10-3 decision over Robert Bittles. "Derek (Mroczek) kind of got off to a slow start," commented Mikesell. "But once he got going he took care of business."

Mroczek agreed with Mikesell's assessment of his slow start to the match. "I wasn't really awake at the start," he noted. "But once I got the first reversal I knew the match was mine."

Porter also got off to a bit of a slow start versus an aggressive Zach Hesler in the 160 pound class.

Hesler opened by taking a 4-0 advantage on a pair of takedowns, but Porter got untracked and handled Hesler through the final two periods. "I think (Doug) Porter was the wrestler of the night," said Mikesell of his senior after the match. "Tonight was the best I've seen him wrestle. He had a great throw-by and didn't get winded at all in his match."

Those three senior victories helped counteract a 152-pound pin by Greencastle senior Charlie Pingleton, a 50-win wrestler last season who placed 2nd in the state finals, and pins by Tiger Cub 130-pounder Kurt Cantonwine, 119-pounder Chad Nichols along with 171-pound wrestler Colin Beckly and Chase Dunigan at 215.

But the Knights got some important efforts of their own.

Lucas Boyd came through with another important bonus point victory, picking up the fall over Camren Humphrey at 112 pounds. "Lucas had another nice match for us tonight getting his second straight pin on a week night for us," said Mikesell.

Boyd's fall came shortly before junior Corey Grigsby continued his strong year with a fall over Josh Stewart in just 1:38 at 125 pounds. Tony Sanabria also earned a fall in his match with Guy Parish of Greencastle. Sanabria's pin came at the 1:14 mark.

Despite the dual match loss the Knights go into Saturday's five-way match at Sullivan in an important spot for the year. "If we can win three matches on Saturday we'll finish over .500 in dual matches for the first time," commented Mikesell.

Thursday's victories are important for overall confidence according to Mroczek. "It feels really good to get a win in front of the home fans," he commented. "I think that this is the best team we've ever had here," a feeling echoed by Porter. "It felt pretty good to get a win here tonight and show the crowd that we can get some big wins. I think this should help up get our confidence up for Saturday. There will be some good teams (at Sullivan)."
