- Northview earns eight top-3 finishes in beating Wildcats -
CLINTON -- Northview's wrestling team achieved one big goal last week by picking up the first plus .500 dual match record in school history. Now they've earned themselves a pretty special addition to the school's trophy case.
A WIC championship trophy.
Trailing host South Vermillion by seven points heading into the consolation matches, the Knights rallied to win nine of 11 matches in the round to earn a 210-203.5 team title over the Wildcats.
"(The win) is very exciting," commented coach Dan Mikesell. "I think (South Vermillion) was kind of shocked. We really came through in the end."
Northview earned five individual titles on the afternoon as Corey Grigsby improved to 33-1 on the season with a championship at 125 pounds in impressive fashion.
None of Grigsby's matches on the day lasted a full minute. He earned pins in 33 seconds, 40 seconds and 57 seconds for the title.
Austin Staley also got his 30th victory on the year, advancing to 31-5 with a title at 135 pounds. Doug Porter continued an excellent season with his 26th win and a 160-pound victory along with a 145-pound win by Derek Mroczek and a 215-pound win by Jeremiah Allen.
Tony Sanabria also got valuable points for the Knights with a second place finish to Sullivan's Tom Nero.
While those wins were extremely important, third place finishes by Matt Valmoja at 119 and a third place from Brent Withers were huge in picking up points for the Knights. "Valmoja came up with a really big win for us in the consolation round when he beat the number one seed who was from South Vermillion," noted Mikesell. "Withers placed third but he really wrestled well in a 4-2 loss to the top seed who had tech-falled him earlier in the year."
Greg Stultz also came through with some key team points when, in an early match, trailing late in the match was able to reverse his opponent to his back for reversal points and near-fall points in the final five seconds of the match to get the victory and later a fourth place finish.
Lucas Boyd picked up a fifth place finish for Northview at 112 pounds and Chris Dean picked up his 18th win of the year and earned a fifth place finish at 140 with a 9-4 decision.
The Knights next action will come this weekend at home as Northview High School hosts Saturday's sectional competition.
"Now is the time for these kids to focus on their individual goals," noted Mikesell. "Bloomington South is definitely the favorite for the team championship but I think if we wrestle really well we could take second place."
