CLAY CITY -- On Thursday night the Clay City Eels were forced to match up with yet another squad with a much larger height advantage and came out on the short end of a 48-35 decision.

The Eastern Greene Thunderbirds boasted three starters at 6'0 or taller and took advantage of that size in spurts throughout the game.

Clay City shot just 27 percent for the game (12-of-45) while Eastern was able to complete over 46 percent (18-of-39) of their shots for the game.

The Eels were within 20-18 after a Cameron Gerber jumper to open the second half. However, Eastern responded with a 7-0 burst led by 6'3 Hannah Cobine and Danielle Rains who completed a three-point play. Back-to-back turnovers by Clay City enabled the Thunderbirds to turn a two-point advantage into a 27-18 lead just 47 seconds into the third quarter.

From there, Eastern was able to keep Clay City at bay in the quarter as the Thunderbirds outrebounded the Eels eight to four in the third period.

In the fourth quarter, Gerber once again opened scoring for the Eels with a pair of free throws. After Cobine missed a pair of her own free throws, Heather Johnson followed with a jumper that got Clay City within eight points at 38-30.

However, a Stacey Higgins basket for Eastern followed by a turnover on the inbounds pass and a Rains basket ended Clay City's run. The Eels would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way despite 16 points from Whitney McWilliams and 10 from Gerber.

Rains led Eastern with 22 points and nine rebounds while Cobine added nine points and eight rebounds.

The Eels drop to 6-12 with a matchup on Wednesday with South Putnam at 6 p.m.
