As far as appetizers go, Northview found Tuesday's contest between the Lady Knights and Plainfield Quakers quite unappetizing.
The Quakers pressed the Knights into 26 turnovers and held them to just 39 points in a 55-39 victory exactly one week before the two matchup in the first round of sectional action.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Knights and sent the Quakers into their regular season finale on a five game streak of their own.
The two squads matched up favorably over the first eight minutes as Northview found their way to the basket for a handful of layins despite turning the ball over five times in the period. Plainfield's press opened up the lane for driving high percentage shots for the Knights who shot 70 percent (seven-of-10) from the field in the period.
Senior Erica Koehler hit all five of her shots in the quarter, good for 11 of her 17 points in the game.
But the Quakers were even with the Knights, taking three more shots than the Knights due to the Northview turnovers.
In the second quarter Plainfield turned up the heat on their trapping defense and Northview's guards didn't handle it well.
Northview committed 10 turnovers in the period as Plainfield attempted nearly twice as many shots as the Knights.
While Northview hit just one-of-six shots in the quarter, Plainfield capitalized on their extra possessions to hit six-of-11 and take a 12 point halftime lead.
After the break the Knights made a couple of inroads to the Quaker lead, but each time was headed off by key second chance baskets off Plainfield offensive rebounds.
Koehler would hit back-to-back baskets to get the Knights within 11 points at 35-24 in the third quarter, but a Brittney Caraboa basket pushed the lead back to 13 points. Freshman Jessica Wolfe then missed a pair of free throws but junior Mary Pearcy grabbed the offensive rebound and the basket to push the lead back to 15 points.
Another brief run on baskets by Julie Whitted and Casey Challandes again closed the gap but Allison Lutocka responded with a basket to end the period with the Quakers leading 40-28.
Whitted would open the final quarter with a pair of free throws that got the Knights within 10 points, poised for a closing run at the 14-6 Quakers.
However, Plainfield would respond with an 11-2 run capped by a Megan Brock 3-pointer that ended the Knights hopes of a victory in game one of the double header that ends with next Tuesday's sectional game at Terre Haute South.
Koehler led the Knights in scoring and Whitney Medworth chipped in eight points for Northview but hit just four-of-12 shots from the field. Whitted was held to six points after ringing up a triple-double in her last game.
Northview will face the Quakers on Feb. 10 at Terre Haute South High School beginning at approximately 6 p.m.
The Northview junior varsity squad opened the night with a rousing 36-30 victory as Jennifer Gregg led the Knights with a game-high 15 points.
Northview took a 38-28 lead into the final period as the Knight's 2-3 zone held Plainfield at bay in the fourth quarter.
The Quakers scored just four points in the period and Gregg scored 12 of her points in the second half of the victory.
Heather Palmer scored six while Kayla Harland and Lexee Hayes each tallied five points for the Knights who are now 13-3 this season.
