Northview's Shawn Hughes (#25) goes up for a jumper in a game against Plainfield last week. He would have seven points against South Putnam on Thursday night.

GREENCASTLE -- The Northview Knights won the high school basketball game by 21 points Thursday night at South Putnam High School.

Josh Timm scored 25 points, Logan Whitman 20 and Zach Keyes netted 20 as the Knights ran their record to 15-3 with the 81-60 non-conference

victory.

Despite that 21-point final margin, Coach Mitch Lancaster found very little to be positive about after the 194th victory of his varsity coaching career.

"This is a "W" in which we played very poorly. To get a defensive effort like that is very disappointing," Lancaster said.

Northview could not keep South Putnam from getting the ball inside. South Putnam's frontcourt of 6-foot-6 Kyle Roberts, 6-foot Matt Hicks and 6-3 Sam Beasor combined for 45 points and 31 rebounds. Hicks led the Eagles with 21 points and 8 rebounds, followed Beasor with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Roberts with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded the Knights 42-27 for the game.

"You got to give their big kids credit. They posted hard. They beat us to spots," Lancaster said.

Still, Northview led 24-14 at the first stop and 46-26 at halftime. "We forced some turnovers early," Lancaster said.

The Knights built a 25-point, 51-26, lead at 7:10 in the third quarter.

Whitman converted on an ally-oop pass from Timm for two and followed with a 3-pointer to open the second half of the contest.

But going into the fourth quarter Northview's lead was down to 61-45 and South Putnam had the momentum. The Eagles scored first in the final period to cut the margin to 14 points, 61-47. That was as close as the Eagles got.

Timm and Keyes combined for 10 points over the next two minutes, inflating the cushion 71-51 with 4:30 to play. "You got to tip your hat to Coach [Kyle] Brewer. [South Putnam] had a plan and they stuck with it," Lancaster said.

Northview shot 43 percent (25-58) from the floor, but hit 80 percent (20-35) from the free throw line. South Putnam shot 45 percent (25-56), but hit just 50 percent (9-18) at the free throw line.

Northview's junior varsity improved to 8-7 on the year with a 50-48 win over South Putnam. Greg Chestnut led the Knights with 19 points.
