Eels pound Miners for TRC title

Wednesday, February 18, 2004

CLAY CITY -- The Clay City Eels celebrated "Senior Night" and their second straight Tri-River Conference boys high school basketball championship all at one time on Tuesday.

Getting balanced scoring from Brock Roberts, Roger Harden and Jared Defore, the Eels overpowered the Linton Miners 60-35.

Clay City, 12-6 overall, wrapped up the conference title with a perfect 5-0 record. The Eels are 10-0 in the league over the last two championship seasons.

"To win the conference title for the second year in a row makes tonight a big win for the kids," Clay City Coach Grant McVay said.

The Eels shot a blazing 58 percent [22-38] from the floor. Roberts, Harden and Defore combined to hit 19-of-31 shots [61 percent] from the floor, including the team total of 6-for-9 from three-point range.

"When we moved the ball well we got good shots," McVay said, pointing out the Eels should learn from that experience.

The Eels' man-to-man defense was just as effective, holding the Miners to 36 percent [14-39] shooting. Riley Beach led Linton with 12 points.

"Tonight we played very well defensively," McVay said. "[The Miners] were trying to be very deliberate. To force 21 turnovers is very good for us, and obviously that is going to lead to more [scoring] opportunities."

Clay City led 14-8 at the first stop and extended its lead to 30-14 in the second period. The Eels took a 42-26 lead into the fourth quarter and the final margin [25 points] was the largest of the night.

"Give a lot of credit to Clay City. We've got to be a little tougher and work harder on both ends of the floor," Linton Coach Gene Hall said.

The Clay City JV made it a sweep, defeating Linton 44-31. The Eels, now 12-4, were led by Stephen Johnson and Garrett Thatcher with 11 points each.

Clay City travels to West Vigo on Friday night.
