On Friday night in Indianapolis, Northview wrestler Austin Staley achieved something for his high school, something historic. Staley's 9-7 decision win in the first session of the IHSAA State Wrestling Championships over Jarrett Mahurin of Triton Central in the 130-pound weight class qualified him for matches Saturday and will make him the first state medalist in the school's history, coach Dan Mikesell said.

"(Staley) didn't wrestle real aggressive after the first period," he said adding, "he wrestled smart."

The key to winning the match Friday, Miikesell said, was Staley getting opponent Mahurin on his back in the first period giving him a point cushion he could take to victory. "We're going to get him focused for Saturday," Mikesell said.

Staley will attempt to advance farther in the state competition taking on Yorktown's Erik Johnson. Johnson advanced to the next round by defeating Dan Zemlik of Portage in a 4-2 decision. The Northview grappler will have to win two more matches to claim the championship in the 130-pound class and in the process have to work through one of the tougher weight classes this year. Session two action begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with weigh-in starting at 8:30 a.m. at Conseco Fieldhouse.
