Waldron denies White River Valley a shot at state championship

Monday, March 22, 2004

White River Valley's quest for a state basketball championship came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the state's lone unbeaten squad, Waldron, kept their streak alive with an 82-76 semistate victory.

Six-foot six inch twins Justin and Jordan Barnard proved too much to handle for the Wolverines.

The pair combined for 66 points and 26 rebounds along with 11 assists to overcome a tremendous 41 point effort from WRV senior A.J. Graves who finished his career with over 2,000 points.

Justin Barnard was the real thorn in WRV's side with a 49 point, 20 rebound evening that propelled his squad to Conseco Fieldhouse for the state championship game next weekend.

White River Valley trailed by eight points late in the fourth quarter before Graves went on an eight point streak to get the Wolverines within two points after a Justin Barnard basket.

But the Mohawks got a dunk from the Barnard's and a pair of free throws from Jordan Barnard and a dunk from Justin that upped the lead again to eight at 78-70 with just over a minute remaining.

But Graves rebounded the Wolverines with a pair of free throws followed by a pair of charity tosses from Jordan Schantz. The Mohawks committed another turnover that ended with a score from Graves. Suddenly WRV was back to within two points at 78-76 with 51 seconds left.

Waldron would turn the ball over on their next possession but Schantz missed a layup and Justin Barnard dropped home a pair of free throws with 13 ticks left on the clock. He would close out the game with a dunk and the Mohawks earned a berth to the state title game against Fort Wayne Blackhawk (15-10) on Saturday.
