school baseball season on Tuesday night.
Brady Shoemaker hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Northview never trailed en route to an 8-1 victory over the host Owen Valley Patriots.
"I was pretty pleased, overall, with the way we played," Northview Coach Gary Witham said.
Northview (1-1, 1-0 in WIC) and Owen Valley (0-1, 0-1 in WIC) meet again Wednesday at 5 p.m., this time at Northview High School.
Backed by a solid defense, starting pitcher Michael Stuckey pitched five strong innings before Shoemaker came on in the sixth to finish the seven-inning contest. Stuckey struck out five, walked three and gave up
all three of Owen Valley's hits.
"Michael Stuckey did a nice job. He got behind in the count to much to
the hitters and had to pitch out of the hole a lot, but he did a good job of shutting [Owen Valley] down when they got men on base. And, I thought our defense was pretty good, too," Witham said.
Witham was surprised to learn Northview had 12 hits against Owen Valley's two pitchers. Shoemaker went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Craig Trout had two singles, an
RRI and scored one run and seven other Knights had base hits.
Northview jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when T.J. King reached
base on an error to lead off the game. Shane Cooper followed with a single and Shoemaker ripped a full-count pitch over the 350-mark in left field for a home run.
"[The home run] put [Owen Valley] in a hole right away and it's hard to
come out of a hole like that when you're in the first inning and you're
down 3-0 and you haven't even seen the plate yet," Witham said.
The Knights scored two runs after two outs in the third inning to increase their lead to 5-0.
Shoemaker connected for a one-out singled to right field and, after the
second out, moved around to third base when Jason Johnson singled to
right. Trout followed with a base hit to left that scored Shoemaker and
moved Johnson to second. Graig Bass lifted a towering fly ball to the
warning right field warning track for a hit that plated Johnson.
The Knights ran the score to 7-1 in the fifth inning when Wade Thacker
drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single.
Cody Jones scored the eighth run with some aggressive base running in
the seventh. Jones reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to
second a throwing error. Shawn Hughes singled to left field and Coach Witham waved Jones around third. Owen Valley's catcher dropped the ball at homeplate.
After Wednesday's game with Owen Valley, Northview travels east on
U.S. 40 to South Putnam High School on Saturday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
