Clay City falls in baseball, take second and third in track opener

The Clay City Eels opened the 2004 track season with a difficult matchup with perennially strong rival Linton on Monday night.

The Miners were victorious in both the girls and boys meets.

Linton won the boys meet with 91 points to Clay City's 41 and South Vermillion's 34. In the girls event, the Miners scored 66 points to the Wildcats 50.5 and the Eels 39.5.

Andy Huggler was victorious in the 1,600 meters, running a 4:59. He would place third in the 800 behind teammate Kyle Tiefel's second. Tiefel would join Logan Bettenbrock, David Schroer and Adam Schroer for a second place finish in the 3,200 relay.

Camrand Tucker placed second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 high hurdles along with a second place 1,600 relay finish with teammates Huggler, Cole Schroer and Jared Defore.

Defore was second in the longjump and teammate Kyle Booe was second in the discus with Roger Harden placing third in the shotput.

Alisha Drake had a strong meet for the Clay City girls, winning the 3,200 meters and placing second in the 1,600 with teammate Lacy Rood in third. Rood would also finish third in the 800 meters.

Freshman Rebecca Seymour won the longjump with a leap of 13-7 1/2 and placed third in the 100 hurdles. Danielle Steiner placed second in the longjump.

The 3,200 relay team of Elizabeth Effner, Drake, Mindy Jackson and Lacy Rood placed first with a time of 11:47. Effner would also take second in the 3,200 meters.

Sabrina Liechty was third in the discus and fourth in the shotput with Brittany Rood third in the high jump. Sarah Kennedy was third in the 400 meters.


Clay City Baseball

The Clay City Eels fell to 0-3 overall this season with a 3-1 loss to conference opponent North Daviess on Monday evening.

The Eels struggled at the plate, picking up just three hits in the game against the Cougars.

Brandon Mattox, Knox and Dustin Griffith each had hits for the Eels who scored a single run in the third inning but could get no closer.

The Eels will visit White River Valley on Thursday night for a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader versus the Wolverines.
