Vikings jump on Knights early in softball

Thursday, May 6, 2004

Natalie Shoemaker had a pair of hits in Tuesday's game versus West Vigo, but the Knights dropped a 10-5 decision to the Vikings.

For the Northview Knights' softball team, the best part about Tuesday

night's 10-5 loss to the visiting West Vigo Vikings, is today's rematch in West Terre Haute.

"(Wednesday) I think we'll be more focused. We better be more focus,"

Northview Coach Jason Wise said.

The loss dropped Northview to 8-5 overall and 5-5 in the WIC. "We've got to take one from (West Vigo). If not, we're going to be in a little trouble in the conference. Hopefully (the Knights) bounce back. They've done it all year," Wise said.

Northview committed six errors on defense and pitchers Stephanie Johnson and Elise Sterrett gave up 10 bases on balls.

"It's actually eight errors if you count all of the throws. But, you're not going to win any games (giving up) 10 walks and eight errors," Wise said.

The Vikings used the Knights' fielding errors to build a 9-0 lead. West Vigo scored four runs on four Northview errors in the fourth inning and five runs on two walks, two errors and two hits in the fifth inning. West Vigo's Joy Whitney drove a ball to the fence in left-center field to scored three runs.

West Vigo's Jenny Cuffle held Northview hitless through three innings. Natalie Shoemaker, who was 2-4 with a double, broke up the no-hitter with a bunt single to lead off the fourth. Shoemaker stole second and scored on a single by Kayla Glassburn. A base hit by Kayla Harlan moved

Glassburn to third base and she raced home on a sacrifice fly to right

field by Chandra Burns.

Casey Challandes led off Northview's fifth with a single, moved to second on a balk and scored on a West Vigo error.

West Vigo had trouble fielding the ball in the sixth and Northview nearly battled back into the contest.

With West Vigo leading 10-3, Northview's Jennifer Gregg and Glassburn

led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. Gregg moved to third on a

throwing error and scored when Burns reached first on an error.

Glassburn scored from third on Challandes ground ball to the right side, but

with two out Northview's chance for a big rally ended.
