SPENCER -- On a beautiful day for golf, the Terre Haute South Braves might have brought up the back in the order of play, but they were first on the scorecards, winning the sectional championship Friday evening at Rolling Meadow Golf Course.

The Braves played in the last group of the course, behind eight other teams in their foursome with North Central, Terre Haute North and Sullivan, but recorded a four man score of 303 to edge out Owen Valley's 306. Linton placed third with 307.

The Linton Miners led through the front nine holes after recording a 150 led by Caleb Dunkerly's 34.

The Braves were three shots back while North was just behind with a 154.

As teams trickled in off the 18th green to the clubhouse, Owen Valley came in with a strong score of 306, led by medalist Matt Beckwith who shot a back-nine 32 to score 71.

Linton came home in 157 to drop back behind Owen Valley with a 307 as a team led by Drew and Caleb Dunkerly's 73's.

The Northview Knights, led by Tyler Akers' even par 72, stood in third place with a team score of 312 as the team waited for the North/South group to finish their rounds.

Caleb Edington recorded a score of 79 after scoring a 37 on the back nine and Austin Staley scored a 40 on each side good for a 40 overall. Adam Thiemann recorded a 37 as well on the back to score an 81 and Kyle Kumpf shot an 82.

"I was pretty disappointed in the way we played the front nine," coach Scott Buell commented afterwards. "We struggled with our putting. But I was extremely happy with how we played the back. We could have quit, but we battled and put ourselves in a position to move on to regionals."

Unfortunately for the Knights, the Braves put together a strong back nine holes as well to come home with a 150.

But as the Patriots golfers brought their scorecards in, the course of the match took a bizarre turn as North golfer John Trieweiler signed an incorrect scorecard which disqualified him and his sub-80 score which forced the Patriots to go to their next scoring golfer which was Jeff Dodson's 80.

The resulting disqualification bumped the Patriots from a top-3 team spot and into a tie for fourth with Northview thus allowing Linton to move on to Christmas Lake Golf Course for next Friday's Regional.

Though just the top three team scores qualify for the regionals, the Knights' Akers did qualify as one of the top three scoring individuals who did not qualify with a team.

His 72 was good for second overall, behind Beckwith's score of 71 on Friday.

"This is the first time I've gotten out so I'm not that disappointed overall. I'm going to have to practice a lot this week, especially on my putting," Akers commented about moving on to regional competition.

The Braves, Owen Valley and Linton will each move on as teams to play at Christmas Lake next weekend.
