After finishing second overall at the Owen Valley sectional last week by firing a 72, Akers is headed to Santa Claus for regional play at the Christmas Lake golf course hosted by Heritage Hills today. If he can make it through the regional, he will be awarded a trip to the IHSAA state finals, which is his goal. The lowest score in sectional play was a 71 by Owen Valley's Matt Beckwith.
"It'd be the first time I went to state in anything," Akers said Thursday morning. "If I play good, I'll make it out (of the regional)."
Akers' coach also knows he has the talent to advance.
"He can definitely compete with them down there and have a chance to go to the state finals," Northview golf coach Scott Buell said.
However, Akers is not satisfied with his driving ability, which is something he has been working on to get ready for regional competition.
'I've been missing fairways," he said.
Despite his minor flaw, he still concentrates on all aspects of the game to prepare for the meet.
"He has been working on his all-around game," Buell said. "Hitting the fair way and chip shots; you can always improve on the game of golf."
Northview's team leader couldn't think of a better ending to his high school golf career other than the state finals, stating his obvious goal.
Akers was the team's greens hit leader and scoring average leader, carding an average of 38 throughout the season.
"He has been our senior leader all year," Buell said. "He has just really improved on the game all year."
Regional play in Santa Claus began today at 7 a.m.
