Clay County 12's win Newburgh state tourney

The Clay County 12's All-Star baseball team defeated Newburgh Wednesday night to take the Cal Ripken State championship. Members of the team are: Caleb Mason, Austin Sciotto, Derek Kennedy, Nate Mullenix, Caleb Andrews, Hunter Robertson, Grant Zimmerman, Seth Lunsford, Justin Kearney, Trent Lancaster, Billy Newton, Ryan Turner and Cam Lumsdon. Coaches are Jeremy Mason, Bill Newton and Tony Sciotto.

Billy Newton helped lead the Clay County 12s to the Southwest state championship tuesday night in Newburgh against the host team.

Newton had three singles in the 3-2 victory to go along with a complete-game six-hitter on the mound.

The Clay County 12s will play New Palestine, the winner of the Southeast Indiana Cal Ripken tournament at Shelbyville this weekend in a best-of-three series.

The two teams play the first game of the series Saturday at 5 p.m. With another contest Saturday at 7 p.m.

If necessary, the series will continue at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The Clay County 12s have already qualified to compete in the Ohio Valley Cal Ripken tournament the following weekend regardless of the results of the series at Shelbyville.
