Football camp stresses fun

Wednesday, July 21, 2004

Football is fun.

That is the message Northview football coach George Gettle stressed to 110 kids Tuesday. Incoming students in grades 3-9 were at the Clay County Youth Football Field for Gettle's Clay County Youth Football Camp.

The 110 boys at the camp eclipses last year's mark of 105.

Several Northview players were on hand to help Gettle teach techniques and fundamentals to the kids.

"We're stressing having fun, safety, fundamentals and technique," Gettle said.

The camp was broken into two sessions. Incoming kids in grades 3-6 will be in camp this week from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Seventh-grade kids and up are in camp from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Helmets and shoulder pads are used for the second group only.

"With the older kids, we try to get a little bit more depth," Gettle said. "We want to teach the younger kids that football is fun and enjoyable. The older kids have played before so it's a little bit more in depth."

The camp will conclude Friday.
